The Gulfport Community Players held their 14th Annual Cathy Awards on Saturday, June 11th, 2011 at our own Back Door Theater. There were 15 categories and many anxious nominees attended the Awards Banquet, each in hopes of being awarded a "Cathy Award" for their efforts during our past season.
First a very nice dinner was enjoyed by all, and then the excitment mounted as the lights dimmed! It was showtime! The categories were announced, then the nominees' names were read. Then came the winners' names and a round of applause from the audience as the winners happily accepted their plaques.
The Cathy Awards were named after our late founder, Catherine A. Hickman. Every year, soon after our season ends, this award's ceremony and banquet is held. It has many purposes, but the one purpose that stands out above all others is to honor those hard working actors, directors, producers, set-builders and designers, etc. that helped make our past season happen. Without these unique people, there would be no community theater at all!
The cost for each ticket to attend this ceremony was just $15. I've personally been asked a number of times this same question: Do we make any money on the actual dinner and ceremony? The answer is NO, and we don't ever intend to. This is our attempt, in a small way, to pay back all the great people that make live theater a reality in Gulfport. We cannot ever pay them back for all of their time, skill, and devotion needed in our productions. Community theater truly is a labor of love.
